In humans, this condition is known as eczema. It's one of the most common dog skin conditions, affecting around 1 in 10 dogs. It's often a result of the animal becoming too sensitive to one or more allergens in the environment, for example house dust mites, pollens, mould spores and occasionally foods.
Your dog might have atopic dermatitis if it:
- Has itchy, red skin
- Has infected or crusted spots
- Is losing its hair
- Has thickened, discoloured skin
As with many skin allergies, it can be a difficult condition to diagnose - why not try and our quick test to see if your dog could be atopic? For more information about atopic dermatitis, please click here.
